The change in means of transport in urban development through history

In the 19th century, urbanisation and town development were driven by seaways and connection to ports. Trains were dominating urban developments of the earlier 20th century, while the car took over as the main bearer a little later in the same century. Airports have been central in driving the global economy in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. At the same time, the need to connect regional job markets, slow down on the use of land, and not least the environmental issue, has given trains, in the shape of high-speed trains, a tremendous renaissance. It is expected that the most important transport systems of the 21st century will be recognised by a combination of planes, high-speed trains and the regional Inter City trains.
